Earning Your Degree Online

For busy professionals, earning a degree online has obvious benefits. What is it like learning online?
At Walden, you won't be "out there on your own." Online learning requires that students be self-directed, not isolated. At Walden, we have mastered the use of technology to create learning communities that are rich with discussion, debate, and partnership. Students form bonds with their professors and classmates across the country and around the world as they exchange ideas via email, phone, and faculty-guided discussions.

Every course has specific objectives, and our professors guide the classroom experience to make sure that these objectives are achieved. In online courses, Walden faculty members typically respond to questions within 24 hours.

What is the Ph.D. learning experience like?
Several of Walden's doctoral programs use an individualized research curriculum that includes Knowledge Area Modules (KAMs). Each KAM culminates in a scholarly paper that demonstrates your mastery of the breadth, depth, and application of an entire subject area. Through this learning model, you will be encouraged to conduct faculty-guided research and study in your area of interest. In addition, you will supplement your distance-learning experience with academic residencies that include seminars and individual advising with academic support staff and faculty.

Because one learning model doesn't fit all programs, some programs are course-based, and others use a mix of online courses and KAMs. Courses ensure that you are exposed to the most up-to-date thinking in your area of study, and KAMs give you the flexibility to pursue your own specific interests. All of our programs encourage you to apply your new knowledge to the issues you are passionate about.

Our curriculum is rigorous. Our faculty is highly experienced. And our distance-learning approach optimizes relevance and depth of learning by letting our more than 20,000 students share experiences with professional peers from all over the world.

What student support services can I expect?

Walden University's Online Concierge Team provides student support via phone, email, and live chat during regular business hours. Online concierges are assigned to every new student, and provide expertise in navigating the virtual classroom environment. They assist new students with a student readiness orientation, helping to create a smooth and trouble-free experience in the online learning environment. Our concierge team also provides technical and administrative assistance in courses and helps to ensure that students stay on track. Additional technical support at Walden is available 24/7.

Walden students also have collaborative relationships with academic advisors, faculty mentors, and other students.

What distinguishes Walden's faculty?
At Walden University, the faculty is composed of highly esteemed scholars, researchers, and distinguished professionals from broad geographical, experiential, and cultural backgrounds. Since its inception, Walden has focused on graduate degrees. Our faculty members are full time or deans and tenured faculty at other universities, as well as corporate executives, educators, clinicians, and military leaders. Most faculty have Ph.D.s or a terminal degree; all are credible experts with vast experience and a profound commitment to adult learners. Faculty members are required to complete intensive training in online instruction.

What kind of investment will I need to make?
Online learning is neither fast nor easy. Our students report that they spend up to 20 hours per week on each course they take—reading, working on assignments, taking part in discussions, and conducting research projects. Academic advisors encourage students to schedule blocks of time dedicated to sustained critical thinking, reflection, and scholarly work.

Most doctoral students complete their degree in four to six years, though it is possible to finish the program in as little as 30 months. Because of the serious time commitment involved in pursuing a Ph.D., advisors encourage students to take time before they begin a program to discuss the details with the important people in their lives.

At Walden University, we offer a full range of financial aid, including federally subsidized and unsubsidized student loans, payment plans, spousal and group tuition reductions*, and fellowships. Doctoral fellowships are awarded to selected students who demonstrate that they are pursuing a degree to enhance their personal development and to contribute to the advancement of their profession.

* Not valid for Tennessee residents.
